Feast of the Immaculate Conception
From Saint of The Day, December 8
In 1854 Pius IX gave the infallible statement: “The most Blessed Virgin Mary, in the first instant of her conception, by a singular grace and privilege granted by almighty God, in view of the merits of Jesus Christ, the savior of the human race, was preserved free from all stain of original sin.”
The infallible Church teaching proclaimed in 1854 that Mary was sinless at her conception and throughout her life. Other members of the human race are cleansed from original sin after birth ( Roman Catholic baptism ). In Mary, Jesus' work was so powerful as to prevent original sin from the outset.
...Two Franciscan scholars helped developed the theology. They pointed out that Mary's ( not Christ's) immaculate conception enhances Jesus' redemption work...
Editor's note: Sola Christos ... Christ alone knew no sin
