At least 16 deaths, 6.2 million without power in Superstorm Sandy's wake

Chicago Tribune

Tribune wire reports

2:27 a.m. CDT, October 30, 2012

Superstorm Sandy slammed into the New Jersey coastline with 80 mph winds Monday night and hurled an unprecedented 13-foot surge of seawater at New York City, flooding its tunnels, subway stations and the electrical system that powers Wall Street.

At least 16 U.S. deaths were blamed on the storm, which brought the presidential campaign to a halt a week before Election Da. Sandy also killed 66 people in the Caribbean.

For New York City at least, Sandy was not the days-long onslaught many had feared, and the wind and rain that sent water sloshing into Manhattan from three sides began dying down within hours.

XCrew rescued from HMS BountyTrack Sandy's pathA Web guide to tracking Hurricane Sandy Ads by GoogleStill, the power was out for hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers and an estimated 6.2 million people altogether across the East. The full extent of the storm's damage across the region was unclear, and unlikely to be known until daybreak.

East Coast Bracing For Frankenstorm Sandy

East Coast Readies for Hurricane Sandy, Winter Storm -ABC NEWS

"It's looking like a very serious storm that could be historic," said Jeff Masters, meteorology director of the forecasting service Weather Underground. "Mother Nature is not saying, 'Trick or treat.' It's just going to give tricks."

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration forecaster Jim Cisco, who coined the nickname Frankenstorm, said: "We don't have many modern precedents for what the models are suggesting."

Government forecasters said there is a 90 percent chance — up from 60 percent two days earlier — that the East will get pounded.

Coastal areas from Florida to Maine will feel some effects, but the storm is expected to vent the worst of its fury on New Jersey and the New York City area, which could see around 5 inches of rain and gale-force winds close to 40 mph. Eastern Ohio, southwestern Pennsylvania and western Virginia could get snow.

Editor's note:  The threat of X-class flares next week adds a new dimension of risk to this event and / or another natural disaster follow-on event may occur due to the disruption of the earth's geomagnetic field during the same time period.

Brace yourself.  Prepare now for anything.

RSOE EDIS: Japan - Volcano Eruption

RSOE
Description:
An underwater volcanic eruption was detected Wednesday morning close to Minami-Iwoto island in the Pacific Ocean and an expert speculated that the eruption could form a permanent island. A coast guard vessel spotted a white plume of smoke rising from the sea about three miles north-northeast of the island. It was the first time since July 2005 that volcanic smoke had been detected in the area, which is located about 745 miles south of central Tokyo. According to an announcement by the 3rd Regional Coast Guard Headquarters of the Japan Coast Guard, based in Yokohama, the volcano spewed ash and smoke about 100 meters into the air, and the surrounding sea area changed to a yellowish-green color while other parts became a cloudy gray. According to the Meteorological Agency, the volcano, known as Fukutokuokanoba, has erupted seven times since 1904, when its activities were first recorded. On three occasions, land masses were formed, but all later sank below the waterline. Tokyo Institute of Technology Prof. Kenji Nogami, an expert in geoscience, said: "In the 1986 eruption, a new island appeared after lava accumulated. The island was washed away by waves, but seabed upheaval reduced the water depth to 22 meters in 1999. It's possible that this (recent) volcanic activity could form a permanent island."

Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood official calls for 'holy jihad' against Israel

Jerusalem Chronicle

By Anna Sheinman, October 12, 2012

Supreme Guide of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt Mohammed Badie said on Thursday that Arabs must deal with Israel “through holy Jihad, high sacrifices and all forms of resistance”.

In a public address, reported by Egyptian daily newspaper Al-Ahram, the leading official of the ruling political party said: “The time has come for the Islamic nation to unite around one man for the sake of Jerusalem and Palestine,”

He continued: “The Jews have dominated the land, spread corruption on earth, spilled the blood of believers and in their actions profaned holy places, including their own.”

“Zionists only understand the language of force and will not relent without duress,” said Mr Badie. “This will only happen through holy Jihad, high sacrifices and all forms of resistance. The day they realize we will march this path and raise the banner of Jihad for the sake of God, is the day they will relent and stop their tyranny.”

Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi was a presidential candidate for the Muslim Brotherhood, but resigned from all official positions in the organisation when he took office. He has recently named an ambassador to Israel.

North Korea claims U.S. mainland within reach of missiles

North Korea on Tuesday warned that the U.S. mainland is within range of its missiles, and said Washington's recent agreement to let Seoul possess missiles capable of hitting all of the North shows the allies are plotting to invade the country.

Seoul announced Sunday it reached a deal with Washington that would allow it to nearly triple the range of its missiles to better cope with North Korean missile and nuclear threats. On Tuesday, North Korea called the deal a "product of another conspiracy of the master and the stooge" to "ignite a war" against the North.

NATO will 'protect and defend Turkey' if Syria launches an attack

Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said NATO will support Turkey if it is attacked by Syria
Tensions have been escalating since Syrian shells struck a border town in Turkey killing five civilians last week
Syria's revolt against President Bashar al-Assad threatening to draw in regional powers

NATO will defend Turkey from being attacked by Syria as tensions continue to escalate between the two countries, the head of the military alliance announced today.
NATO ambassadors threw their support behind Turkey in an emergency meeting after Syrian shells struck a border town in Turkey killing five civilians last week.
The two neighbours have repeatedly exchanged fire since then, the most serious outbreak of cross-border violence since Syria's revolt against President Bashar al-Assad erupted 18 months ago.
