Pastor and author Kevin DeYoung shares the highlights of Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones (1899-1981) three addresses in Mittersill, Austria on the theme “What is an Evangelical?” Excerpts & links from each post by Pastor DeYoung...
Part I: We must be sure and certain we know exactly what we mean by “evangelical”... Evangelical is chiefly a doctrinal term that should be defined and defended to our very “latest breath."
Part II: We are concerned about the souls of men and women. We are here to spread the good news of salvation. This is the reason we must be careful about our definitions and careful about the truth...Secondly, with reference to method, I am again concerned to emphasize that, at the same time, we must be historical in our approach....The evangelical “always give primacy to preaching...the evangelical is a man who is always concerned about evangelism."
Part III Lloyd Jones begins the third lecture by distinguishing between essential and secondary truths. “We must be as inclusive as we can and yet draw certain lines which we regard as being essential”. The concern is that once “you divide yourself off from people who are heterodox or who have virtually no belief at all...you are confronted by a further problem ...
Part IV Pastor DeYoung list several positives and a few negatives in Lloyd-Jones’ answer to the question “What is an Evangelical?”
