Anglican Cathedral Converts To New Age Circus Tent
Massage and mysticism as New Age comes to cathedral
Manchester Cathedral was transformed by stalls offering ‘meditation, mysticism and prophesy’ as part of a controversial festival.
The Spirit of Life event saw visitors being offered massage, dream interpretation and tarot-style ‘card readings’ as part of an alternative Christian event.
A tent offers ‘reflective sights’ while gemstones and music were also on show at the New Age-style event.
But organisers of the New Age-style event insist they were staying true to traditional Christian values - and trying to win over new followers to the Church.
The centuries-old cathedral was filled with stalls, demonstrations and even a full-size tent as part of the day-long festival.
Stallholders offered ‘Jesus Deck’ card readings - which they insisted were not designed to tell fortunes but instead contained passages from the Bible.
A full-size tent inside the cathedral, run by the Eden People Christian group, offered ‘reflective sights, insight objects, healing and prayer’.
Organisers said that while many of the activities drew on New Age thinking, the beliefs behind them were entirely Christian.
..."We are not selling out. The Church of England is a broad church and it includes an incredible range of people. These activities are a tool to talk about deeper Christian beliefs."
