Israel, Syria and The Pope

Syria fired upon Israeli aircraft that reportedly attacked targets in Northern Syria on Wed night. Earlier in the day, Pope Benedict had met with Syria's vice president, Farouk al-Sharaa to discuss the exodus of Christian and other refugees from Iraq, many of whom have fled to Syria.

On Thursday, president of Israel, Shimon Peres met with the Pope at the Vatican. The Pope "encouraged the president to take advantage of the present favorable conditions to resolve the conflict which has lasted for 60 years." Meanwhile Tony Blair was meeting with Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas on Thursday as he pressed ahead with preparations for a peace conference later this year.
