823 aftershocks recorded after Bohol quake—NDRRMC

MANILA, Philippines — At least 823 aftershocks have been recorded since a 7.2 magnitude earthquake shocked parts of Visayas and Mindanao Tuesday, a disaster official said.

In a press briefing at Camp Aguinaldo Wednesday, Major Rey Balido of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said that as of 8 a.m., there were 823 aftershocks recorded by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology.

NDRRMC Executive Director Eduardo del Rosario, however, allayed fears from the aftershocks, saying these didn’t mean that they were “destructive” and that “less than five percent would be felt”.

As of 8 a.m., deaths from the quake rose to 107, with 97 from Bohol; nine from Cebu; and one from Siquijor.

There were also 276 persons injured.
