At least 5 killed, 200 injured after 6.2-magnitude quake hit Aceh, Indonesia

JAKARTA, July 2 (Xinhua) -- At least five persons were killed and more than 200 others were injured after a 6.2-magnitude quake jolted Aceh province in the northern tip of Sumatra island of Indonesia on Tuesday, officials told Xinhua.


"Four adults and one child were killed when the quake struck," Manager of Field Operation of Aceh Disaster Management and Mitigation Agency named only Iskandar told Xinhua over phone from the province.

Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, spokesman of National Disaster Management and Mitigation Agency confirmed the casualties and said that two people still went missing.

As many as 70 people were injured in Benermeriah district and 140 others in Central Aceh, he said.

Dozens of houses and one main road were damaged in Benermeriah and over 300 houses were damaged in Central Aceh, said Sutopo.

Evacuation took place in five spots after the quake, and assessment of the impact of the quake continued, said Sutopo.
