'Unclassified and unidentified' life found in Antarctic lake

Russian scientists claim to have found new "unclassified and unidentified" life forms after drilling through almost 4km (2.3 miles) of ice to reach a hidden lake in Antarctica.

Samples retrieved from Lake Vostok contained bacteria with DNA substantially different to anything previously recorded, suggesting they may be new to science.

Vostok, Antarctica's largest subglacial lake, is believed to have been sealed off from the outside world for millions of years, meaning any life within it has evolved in complete isolation.
