Man sets church's building on fire in South Carolina

Man accused of setting church's building on fire in Spartanburg Co.

CAMPOBELLO, SC (WSPA) - A man has been charged with second-degree arson after a building belonging to an area church in Spartanburg County caught on fire on Thursday.

According to a Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office report, deputies were called to Smith Chapel Baptist Church, located at 750 Smith Chapel Road at the request of Campobello Fire Department.

Fire crews had responded to that location in regards to a structure fire around 2 p.m. Thursday, and then they requested an arson investigator respond to the scene.

Jerry Lewis Toney, 63, of Columbus, NC, has been charged with second-degree arson.

He was taken to the Spartanburg County Detention, where he was being held on $20,000 bond.
