National Cathedral rings church bells to cheer Supreme Court’s gay marriage ruling

The National Cathedral in Washington rang its church bells for 45 minutes to an hour on Wednesday to celebrate the Supreme Court's rulings that cleared the path for gay marriage in California and federal recognition for married same-sex couples.

Cathedral spokesman Richard Weinberg said the bells rang at noon. Bells also rang at other Episcopal, Methodist, Presbyterian, Unitarian and other Christian churches, CBS DC reported.

The cathedral scheduled a prayer service for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender families Wednesday at 7 p.m. to celebrate the ruling, CBS said.

In a statement, the cathedral's dean, the Rev. Gary Hall, said the church rang its bells "to celebrate the extension of federal marriage equality to all the same-sex couples modeling God's love in lifelong covenants."
