This year’s Munich Security Conference returned to the theme of great power conflict, which many thought had ended with the cold war almost three decades ago. Against a morbid backdrop of three aircraft — Russian, Turkish and Israeli — being downed over Syria, Wolfgang Ischinger, chairman of this gathering of defence and security policymakers, said that “at no time since the collapse of the Soviet Union has the risk of armed conflict between major powers been as high as it is today”.

That seems right. In Syria there is a real risk of clashes between Nato allies Turkey and the US, and between the US and Russia. These can probably be contained through the use of proxies, which was how the US and Soviet Union fought each other across Africa, Asia and Latin America during the cold war. Yet Middle Eastern crises have a habit of ricocheting out of the region. While the cold war balance of nuclear terror obtained, the two sides managed the risks: notably during the 1973 Arab-Israeli war and the 1982 confrontation between Israel and Syria.

...Mahony, who as the archbishop of Los Angeles covered up priestly sex abuse while defending Communion for pro-abortion politicians and targeting EWTN’s orthodox Mother Angelica, was disciplined in 2013 by his successor Archbishop Jose Gomez. Gomez banned Mahony from “any administrative or public duties.”

...Pope Francis’ appointing of Mahony as his special envoy came just before news emerged about the pontiff’s own role in the promoting rather than punishing of sex abuser and sex abuser-enabling clerics.  

Pope Francis claimed he’d never received any information about the role Chilean Bishop Juan Barros had in child sex abuse. But it turns out Cardinal Sean O’Malley had personally delivered him a letter from a victim.

After a court order requiring the Archdiocese of Los Angeles to release documents some of which expose Mahony’s cover-up of sexual abuse by priests, Gomez publicly censured Mahony who retired after 25 years of being Cardinal Archbishop of the city in 2011.

“Effective immediately, I have informed Cardinal Mahony that he will no longer have any administrative or public duties,” said a public letter issued by Archbishop Gomez Thursday.

The documents, some 12,000 pages, show that Mahony purposely concealed from the public his knowledge of priests who had committed sex crimes with youth, transferring the perpetrators after they received counseling only to have them sexually abuse again and again.

The abuses were so severe that current Archbishop Jose Gomez commented Thursday, “I find these files to be brutal and painful reading. The behavior described in these files is terribly sad and evil.”

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - A prolonged 7.2 magnitude quake that rocked Mexico on Friday left nearly a million homes and businesses without power in the capital and south but the only reported deaths came when a military helicopter crashed after surveying the aftermath.

At least 50 homes suffered damage in the southern state of Oaxaca, which, along with Mexico City, is still reeling from earthquakes that caused widespread damage in September.

The epicenter was about 90 miles (145 km) from Pacific coast surfer resort Puerto Escondido in the southern state of Oaxaca and had a depth of 15.3 miles (24.6 km), according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

At least two people died when a helicopter carrying Mexico’s interior minister and the governor of Oaxaca crashed while trying to land after a tour of damage from the earthquake, officials said. The senior officials survived.

The powerful, sustained shaking on Friday gave way to 225 aftershocks, the national seismology service said, and caused widespread panic.

In Mexico City, the seismic alarm sounded 72 seconds before tremors were felt, Mayor Miguel Angel Mancera said, giving residents time to flee to the streets.

Speaking at an event held by the Ethiopian-American Muslims of the Washington metropolitan area on January 26, 2013, Imam Shaker Elsayed of the Dar Al-Hijrah Islamic Center said that the Muslims had three sources of power – faith, unity, and armaments – and that "the world only fears those who fight back." The event was held at T.C. Williams High School in Alexandria, Virginia, to mark the "year long anniversary of the peaceful Ethiopian Muslims' movement for religious freedom, equality and justice in Ethiopia." The event was billed as aimed as a "show [of] our support to the peaceful struggle of the Muslims in Ethiopia as well as a condemnation of the violent government repression against them." After Elsayed finished speaking, one of the organizers clarified: "Imam Shaker is not advocating for armed struggle in Ethiopia. He is just simply giving us a lesson." Elsayed's speech was posted on the YouTube channel of the First Hijrah, a community of Ethiopian Muslims in Washington, DC, on February 13, 2016.

The Catholic church risks damaging its moral authority and plunging its followers into confusion if the Vatican presses ahead with an imminent deal with the Chinese government, a group of influential Catholics has warned.

Fifteen lawyers, academics and human rights activists, most based in Hong Kong, have signed an open letter to bishops across the world expressing dismay at an agreement which would involve the Vatican recognising seven bishops appointed by China’s Communist party.

The deal is aimed at restoring relations between China and the Vatican, which were cut almost 70 years ago. But the group of leading Catholics say it could create a schism in the church in China.

“We are worried that the agreement would not only fail to guarantee the limited freedom desired by the church, but also … deal a blow to the church’s moral power,” the letter says. “Please rethink the current agreement, and stop making an irreversible and regrettable mistake.”

The letter comes less than two weeks after a senior Catholic leader in Asia accused the Vatican of selling out the church in its efforts to make a deal with the Chinese government.

Cardinal Joseph Zen, the former bishop of Hong Kong, wrote in a blog post: “Do I think the Vatican is selling out the Catholic church in China? Yes, definitely, if they go in the direction which is obvious from all what they are doing in recent years and months.”

re-evaluate how it treats survivors.

Rachael Denhollander was the first woman to publicly accuse former USA Gymnastics team doctor Larry Nassar of sexual abuse. As she worked to find justice for herself and the doctor’s other victims, Denhollander began to turn a critical eye on a community that she depended on dearly for support ― her church.

Denhollander, an evangelical Christian, saw that Biblical teachings about grace and repentance were being weaponized against victims, pressuring them into offering an easy forgiveness to their abusers. At the same time, churches lacked accountability structures that treated victims with compassion and respect.

It soon became clear to her that when it comes to properly caring for survivors of sexual abuse, the church has a long way to go ― and experts HuffPost spoke to agree.

Denhollander opened up about her disappointment with the American evangelical church in an interview Wednesday with Christianity Today’s Morgan Lee.

“Church is one of the least safe places to acknowledge abuse because the way it is counseled is, more often than not, damaging to the victim,” said Denhollander, who now works as a lawyer in Kentucky. “There is an abhorrent lack of knowledge for the damage and devastation that sexual assault brings. It is with deep regret that I say the church is one of the worst places to go for help.”

Nassar pleaded guilty in November to 10 counts of first-degree criminal sexual contactfor abusing young athletes under the guise of medical treatment. He was sentenced last week to up to 175 years in jail.

Denhollander was one of more than 150 survivors who shared statements in court during Nassar’s sentencing hearing. In her statement, Denhollander spoke about how her advocacy for sexual assault victims “cost me my church and our closest friends.”

...Instead the Trump administration has settled on a more refined approach, seeking to designate violent chapters of the Muslim Brotherhood as terrorists, but not going after the entire organization. As the national security adviser, H.R. McMaster, told reporters in December: "We will be evaluating each organization on its own terms. The organization is not monolithic or homogenous."

...There are no plans for the Trump administration to attempt to find common ground with the Muslim Brotherhood, U.S. officials tell me. But the administration is getting more aggressive against the Brotherhood's violent affiliates.

On Wednesday, the U.S. ambassador for counterterrorism, Nathan Sales, gave some specifics on this new approach at the annual conference for the Institute for National Security Studies in Tel Aviv. To start he named Ismail Haniyeh, the chief of the Hamas politburo, as a specially designated global terrorist. That means his assets will be blacklisted from the global financial system. Hamas was first designated as a terrorist organization by the U.S. government in 1997. But in Obama's second term, the pace of designations against Hamas slowed to a trickle.

...Sorondo’s comments were especially galling because they amounted to nothing less than bearing false witness. He went on at great length about how the Chinese “do not have shantytowns,” and Chinese young people “do not take drugs,” thanks to China’s “positive national conscience.” It’s true that under China’s “state capitalism” hundreds of millions of people have been lifted out of poverty. It’s also true that hundreds of millions still live in crushing poverty.

150 strong aftershocks rattle Taiwan after magnitude-6.4 quake

The death toll rose to six, more than 250 people were injured and scores more remained missing following Tuesday's magnitude-6.4 quake centered 13 miles from Hualien, a city of more than 100,000 on Taiwan's east coast.

More than 150 strong aftershocks rattled the area, keeping residents and emergency officials on edge as survivors clambered from compromised buildings.

Four mobile cranes propped up the perilously tilting Yun Men Tsui Ti complex — home to apartments, a restaurant, shops and a hostel. Taiwan's TVBS News reported authorities suspended rescue efforts in the 12-story complex late Wednesday during heavy rains as the building's tilt grew more pronounced.

Among those rescued was Japanese couple Shumin Okubo, 63, and her husband Tao, 68. She told Taiwan's state-owned Central News Agency they were in bed when it began sliding toward the wall as the building tilted. She said her husband has a physical disability due to a stroke.

Meeting with Pope Francis on Monday, Turkey’s president pointed to the harm that would result from the recent U.S. decision on Jerusalem, stressing that it should never be put into practice.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s one-on-one meeting with Francis at the Apostolic Palace at the Vatican was "extremely amicable," according to presidential sources.

During the meeting, the two leaders discussed Jerusalem, the ongoing refugee crisis, and developments in the Mideast, primarily Syria, as well as terrorism, and interfaith relations, said the sources, who asked not to be named due to restrictions on speaking to the media.

Erdogan and the pope asserted the protection of the status of Jerusalem -- sacred to Muslims, Christians and Jews -- as laid out by UN resolutions and international law. 

Francis was one of the most prominent international leaders to criticize the U.S. decision last December to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, and Erdogan thanked the pope for his messages on the issue.

In an ongoing series of tragic events that the mainstream media seems largely uninterested in covering, radical Muslim Fulani herdsmen aided by terrorists launched several attacks against Christians between January 22 and 25, burning down dozens of houses and murdering eight innocent civilians.

The first attack took place on January 22, when Islamic radical ambushed and murdered three Christians traveling from Telma village to their homes in the Kpachudu and Kwall villages. One of the victims was beheaded.

On January 25, Islamic extremists burned 50 homes and a partially constructed church in the village of Zanwra, near the city of Jos, in the Plateau state according to a Morning Star News report.

Rev. Sunday Gado Biri of the Evangelical Church Winning All witnessed the devastation. He told the press, "A critical look at these attacks has revealed that it is not only the herdsmen who are attacking Christian communities, as there are terrorists collaborating with them to carry out these attacks."

David Sams, a resident of a Nashville suburb, told local media that he asked his Google Home, “Who is Jesus Christ?” and got a variety of answers.

“Google knew who I was, but Google did not know who Jesus was. Google did not know who Jesus Christ was, and Google did not know who God was," Sams told journalists.
