(NEW YORK) -- Snow is falling across the Northeast Thursday morning, part of a devastating winter storm system making its way up the East Coast.
The storm has already resulted in at least a dozen deaths and knocked out power to hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses across the South, leaving streets gridlocked and filled with abandoned cars.
That storm is now heading north and could dump more than a foot of snow in some areas Thursday, leaving winter-weary cities buried for the morning commute.
Nineteen states from Alabama to Maine remain under Winter Storm Watches and Warnings Thursday. The heaviest snow is expected to fall in the morning from Washington, D.C. to New York City before mixing with rain and sleet during the day. The largest snow totals, meanwhile, will likely be west of Interstate 95, where some places could get over 15 inches.
As of early Thursday morning, more than 4,600 flights have been canceled nationwide due to the storm, according to FlightAware.com. The airports with the most cancellations include Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International, Philadelphia International, Ronald Reagan Washington National and Newark Liberty International.
