Officials in Saudi Arabia are notorious for their intolerance of outsiders observing the Christian faith within Saudi borders, and on February 8 the country's religious police re-enforced that reputation when they arrested 53 Ethiopian Christians involved in a private prayer service in the Saudi city of Dammam, shutting down the service and hauling the believers off to jail.
According to the World Evangelism Alliance, a total of 46 women and six men were arrested in the raid, and three of the Christians, identified as leaders of the private house church, were charged with trying to convert Muslims to the Christian faith.
In December 2011, the Saudi religious police, known as the mutaween, arrested 35 Ethiopian Christians, 29 of them women, on charges of “illicit mingling” after the authorities raided a private prayer meeting in Jeddah. According to Human Rights Watch, some of the Christians were tortured, and the women were subjected to arbitrary body cavity searches.
In September 2012, a Saudi Arabian girl who converted to Christianity fled to Dammam, a Saudi center for petroleum and natural gas production and a major seaport. The girl was eventually granted asylum in Sweden last month, according to Dammam's Al-Yaum newspaper.
In its 2012 annual report, the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) noted that Saudi Arabia continues to oppress non-Muslim religious observers, with Christians taking a big share of the abuse. “The Saudi government persists in banning all forms of public religious expression other than that of the government's own interpretation of one school of Sunni Islam,” said the report. It also “prohibits churches, synagogues, temples, and other non-Muslim places of worship; uses in its schools and posts online state textbooks that continue to espouse intolerance and incite violence; and periodically interferes with private religious practice.”

Four foreign Christians—including one who holds American-Swedish citizenship—were arrested days ago in Libya. According to the Guardian, their crime is arousing "suspicion of being missionaries and distributing Christian literature, a charge that could carry the death penalty."
Apparently the four Christians had "contracted a local printer to produce pamphlets explaining Christianity." Proselytizing to Muslims—that is, preaching to them another religion—was banned even under the late Col. Muammar Gaddafi.
Libyans—strongly supported by U.S. President Obama in the name of "freedom"—got rid of Gaddafi but kept the distinctly anti-freedom law.
Discussing this case, Libyan security official Hussein Bin Hmeid, trying to justify the Islamic ban on free speech, observes: "Proselytizing is forbidden in Libya. We are a 100% Muslim country and this kind of action affects our national security." Indeed, Muslim governments—most notably Iran's—constantly suppress any talk of Christianity, claiming it threatens "our national security."

Rome (CNN) - The Vatican sought Saturday to tamp down rumors involving sex, money and gay priests that have been swirling in the Italian media and have been linked by some to Pope Benedict XVI's decision to resign.
The strongly-worded denial came on the eve of the pope's last Angelus blessing, expected to draw huge crowds of the faithful, before he stands down on Thursday.
Vatican Secretary of State Tarcisio Bertone said it was "deplorable" that as the time for the Roman Catholic cardinals to elect a new pope approaches, a rash of "often unverified, unverifiable or completely false news stories" has appeared.

Pope will have official seat in the Last Supper room on Mount Zion in Jerusalem
Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon: This is a historic achievement and a symbol that will encourage tourism.
A historical agreement has been signed between Israel and the Vatican, ending a 20 year dispute. Israel has granted the pope an official seat in the room where the Last Supper is believed to have taken place, on Mount Zion in Jerusalem.
Israel did not give up its control over the room, as the Vatican had demanded, but Israel did decide to allow Vatican representatives a special modicum of control over the site.
An additional caveat of the agreement is a tax exemption that Israel will grant to all of the Vatican's institutions in Israel.
Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon and Monsignor Ettore Balestrero, Undersecretary of the Holy See for the Relations with States, sealed the deal on Tuesday. It will be signed in June at the Vatican.

GENEVA: Seven months after its scientists made a landmark discovery that may explain the mysteries of mass, Europe's top physics lab will take a break from smashing invisible particles to recharge for the next leap into the unknown.
From Thursday, the cutting-edge facilities at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (Cern) will begin winding down, then go offline on Saturday for an 18-month upgrade.
A vast underground lab straddling the border between France and Switzerland, Cern's Large Hadron Collider (LHC) was the scene of an extraordinary discovery announced in July 2012.
Its scientists said they were 99.9% certain they had found the elusive Higgs Boson, an invisible particle without which, theorists say, humans and all the other joined-up atoms in the Universe would not exist.
The upgrade will boost the LHC's energy capacity, essential for Cern to confirm definitively that its boson is the Higgs, and allow it to probe new dimensions like supersymmetry and dark matter.
"The aim is to open the discovery domain," said Frederick Bordry, head of Cern's technology department.
"We have what we think is the Higgs, and now we have all the theories about supersymmetry and so on. We need to increase the energy to look at more physics. It's about going into terra incognita (unknown territory)."

From Apprising Ministries
Let me know why you contend against me. (Job 10:2)
Perhaps, weary soul, the Lord is doing this to develop your graces. There are some of your graces that would never be discovered if it were not for your trials.
Do you not know that your faith never looks as good in summer as it does in winter? Love is too often like a glowworm, showing but little light unless it is surrounded by darkness.
Hope itself is like a star–not to be seen in the sunshine of prosperity, and only to be discovered in the night of adversity.
Afflictions are often the black foils in which God sets the jewels of His children’s graces, to make them shine brighter.
It was only a little while ago that on your knees you were saying, “Lord, I fear I have no faith. Let me know that I have faith.”
Were you not really, though perhaps unconsciously, praying for trials? For how can you know that you have faith until your faith is exercised?
Depend upon it–God often sends us trials so that our graces may be discovered and that we may be convinced of their existence.
Besides, it is not merely discovery; real growth in grace is the result of sanctified trials.
God often takes away our comforts and our privileges in order to make us better Christians. He trains His soldiers not in tents of ease and luxury, but by turning them out and subjecting them to forced marches and hard service.
He makes them ford through streams, and swim through rivers, and climb mountains, and walk many long miles with heavy backpacks of sorrow.
Well, Christian, may this not account for the troubles through which you are passing? Is the Lord bringing out your graces and making them grow?
Is it for this reason He contends with you?

The Catholic website SPIRIT DAILY
It keeps rolling on: the implications, the signs, the symbols.
There was the lightning.
This is something that has always carried a spiritual connotation. Satan was seen (by Jesus) as falling like a bolt (Luke 10:18), and the meteorological phenomenon always has seemed a bit spooky -- the backdrop for countless suspense movies, for hauntings, a time during which the spiritual seems energized.
On February 11, 2013, it struck St. Peter's Basilica, twice.
It was just hours (around six p.m. Rome local time) after news broke that Benedict XVI was nearly immediately leaving the papacy.
The world was, yes, "thunderstruck."
We have seen it ourselves -- usually at times of decision or danger, sometimes appearing to indicate the presence of evil, other moments emphasizing some act within the Church. It was thunder that was heard during the apparitions at Lourdes (which were commemorated Monday -- the day of the Pope's announcement). It was thunder and a flash of lightning that introduced the Blessed Mother's first appearance at Fatima in 1917.
Affirming -- or an attack from the devil?
It seems it can be either, or none of the above. There are simple charges of atmospheric electricity.
At the same time, Fatima was also preceded the night before by a vicious storm. The same occurred in the hamlet of Medjugorje, when the night before Mary's first reported apparition lightning struck with such force (damaging the village's post office and first disco) that villagers rushed to the streets to sprinkle Holy Water the night before those reputed apparitions. We encountered unforgettable thunder on the mountain of LaSalette in France (where Mary appeared in 1846) as well as in Medjugorje (where lightning was so bright it even came through the shuttered windows). In Toronto, an incredible lightning bolt was once photographed hitting a cemetery dedicated to St. Michael.

CHELYABINSK, Russia (Reuters) - More than 500 people were injured when a meteorite shot across the sky and exploded over central Russia on Friday, sending fireballs crashing to Earth, shattering windows and damaging buildings.
People heading to work in Chelyabinsk heard what sounded like an explosion, saw a bright light and then felt a shockwave according to a Reuters correspondent in the industrial city 1,500 km (950 miles) east of Moscow.

The Washington Times
A jihadist website posted a new threat by al Qaeda this week that promises to conduct “shocking” attacks on the United States and the West.
The posting appeared on the Ansar al Mujahidin network Sunday and carried the headline, “Map of al Qaeda and its future strikes.”
The message, in Arabic, asks: “Where will the next strike by al Qaeda be?” A translation was obtained by Inside the Ring.
“The answer for it, in short: The coming strikes by al Qaeda, with God’s Might, will be in the heart of the land of nonbelief, America, and in France, Denmark, other countries in Europe, in the countries that helped and are helping France, and in other places that shall be named by al Qaeda at other times,” the threat states.
The attacks will be “strong, serious, alarming, earth-shattering, shocking and terrifying.”
