Pastor Jon Cardwell of Sovereign Grace Baptist Church examines the Piper - Warren dilema:
"...Are John Piper’s reasons valid enough to justify inviting Rick Warren to speak in Piper’s pulpit? Dr. Piper believes they are, according to the YouTube video. He believes that fundamentally, Dr. Warren is theological and that the premise of The Purpose Driven Life, “It’s not about you,”[i] suggests that it somehow corresponds to the first answer of the Westminster or Charles Spurgeon’s catechism, “The chief end of man is to glorify God and to enjoy Him forever.”
"...His ( Warren's ) theology is foundationally and fundamentally different from mine. The central truth in my theology is the person and work of Jesus Christ for God’s glory alone according to Scripture alone. The central premise in Dr. Warren’s theology is church growth. As a result, his approach pragmatism is actually logical, though built on a false and faulty premise: getting results (church growth) through identifying and satisfying the “felt needs” of people who are not in the church.
"...I should conclude by saying that these reasons alone would keep me from inviting Dr. Warren from preaching in my pulpit; yet, it’s not just Rick Warren, and it isn’t personal. I wouldn’t invite any Purpose-Driven® pastor to preach to the congregation the Lord has charged me to watch over and protect: because our theologies are just fundamentally and foundationally incompatible."
