No embassy staff were among the eleven dead. Two car explosions and RPG rockets started the blaze in parts of the heavy fortified building, which has since been extinguished. According to witnesses, the assailants dressed as soldiers drove up to the embassy gate in a Yemeni military vehicle, and were engaged by the guards in a battle of more than 20 minutes, during which one of the cars blew up.
DEBKAfile’s counter-terror sources report that Yemeni president Abdullah Salah, formerly a US partner in the war on terror, has begun working with al Qaeda to win their help for quelling plots by army dissidents to overthrow his regime and for beating back an Iran-backed Shiite rebellion.
