The Christian Examiner reports:
NEW YORK, Calif. — Evangelical Christians—whose central doctrine centers on Jesus as the only way to salvation—are increasingly abandoning the cornerstones of the faith to embrace broader, more inclusive interpretations.
That’s the findings of a new poll released June 24 by the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life. Its study of 35,000 Americans found that 57 percent of evangelicals now believe there are many paths that lead to eternal life, a belief that is being popularized by talk show queen Oprah Winfrey, who is prominently promoting the work of noted New Age author and speaker Eckhart Tolle.
“Americans seem to be fashioning their own beliefs on many of these things because it doesn’t seem to correspond to the official teachings that they’re getting from their own church,” Luis Lugo, director of the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life, said in a news release.
