The UK's Emerging Liturgy

Brian McLaren is hard at work helping Jason Clark with the Emergent Church movement in the UK. One of Clark's protege's Marc Alton Cooper runs the Emergent UK Creation Media Arts blog in support of the movement. In his recent post Liturgy - the repeat offender... Cooper unabashedly displays his affection for Catholic, Orthodox, Anglican and Celtic liturgical traditions.

Cooper writes:
"I believe repetition serves to free us the actual words of the liturgy and helps us connect to God with our souls; this is certainly one of my experiences in sung worship. We will become familiar with the words, what is said and where it is said, and are then able to focus on the meaning of those words thus enabling us to free ourselves and give us a sacred space in which to connect to God."

The Emergents' ecumenical embrace of experiential religion continues, as the roads are paved back to Rome. No doubt the emergent pursuit of "bells and smells" will eventually include the Gregorian chants that the Pope wants to revive.

What else has to happen before the SBC refutes this incursion of heresy?

Matthew 6
7 And when you pray, do not use vain repetitions as the heathen do. For they think that they will be heard for their many words.

  5. it's so true these dodgy people who follow Jesus and believe in him. I think you are right to expose all these people and the sheer variety of spiritual practices that they follow. We can't be having these experimental practices that date back a thousand or so years it's time they stopped experimenting and started formalising!

And who is this catholic, orthodox, anglican and celtic traditions - surely we all know the church sprung up direct in 1953 with no history - why should we possibly need or want to have anything to do with the past i ask you???

so hear hear, keep up the good work, the more people know that marc alton cooper is a lover of smells and bells the better.

As for me I'm sticking to monotone single words from now on, used with no reptition, deviation or hesitiation. Amen!

I think this type of comment miss's the point. It sounds like your saying Mr cooper is a pharasee.
and i find it very uncomfortable that you use scriptures to try and prove your point.

You don't know the motives of Mr Coopers heart. You know nothing about his character either your talking about him as though he is out to decieve the world. God is full of expression and jesus is the same yesterday today and forever jesus commanded people to stick with what we call old traditions. He told the lepor to go visit the priest and offer his gift. as command in the old testiment

What is wrong with looking into the past may i ask dosn't scripture point us to the past to remember things that God has done for us, to remind us how rebellious, stubborn, ignorant, sinful proud blind we are, and that we are in need of Gods mercy and love and forgiveness.
Dosn't scripture say forgive those that offend you. Dosn't scripture say think of things that are good noble. I have had dealings with Jason and Mr Cooper and they are kind generous, loving and giving people, they serve God with thier whole heart. And i have seen and know many people who have been set free from sin and shame through thier dedication to God. The bible says that a tree is known by its fruit.

    Well said.

I used to work for a organisation who dealt with cults. Some of the work was wonderful i must admit this however they again went to the extreme of thinking every other religion is wrong. They were like the pharisees who condemd people who didn't agree with thier teachings.
Maybe this is what is happening here that you guys don't agree with the emergent teaching so your out to discredit them.

Well if this is a move of God then there's nothing you can do to stop it remember that. If it isn't a move of God then it will fizzle away. Work out your own salvation remember if your gifted to teach then your going to be held more accountable. If any of you are without sin or havint said or taught somthing which isn't of God then cast your stones remember this God knows there hearts and minds of all of us and i think we should be quick to listen more. People are ignorance paul said in my ignorance and unbelief i tried to destroy the church. You guys may be ignorance of the emergent movement and you may not believe in it but don't try to destroy it.

Love your neighbour as yourself this sums up the law of God and all the stuff in the bible teachings etc... should be done in love not sarcasticlly or arrogantly or puffed up.

Paul i think marc sounds more universal than most of you guys, I have met holy spirit filled anglicans, catholics, so what gives your the right to think that these old traditions aren't valid in Gods eyes?
Why do you want to persecute your fellow christian, Who clearly has a connection and relationship with God. is that whats important that we all know God and allow him to work out our salvation
